EmmalineDesigns as a business has been on hiatus for quite sometime. I am getting more and more clear about how I want to spend my time so that I'm enjoying every moment. If you look up at the heading for this blog you'll see one of my mantras, "Whatever you are doing is the most beautiful thing." This not only reminds me to enjoy life, it also guides me in deciding what I'll be doing on any given day.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvn-3WAcLHTPWot6Aw4vdkbI0hdNMOZXYNzfCVjHfqjz1ihOIoq2j6ChYYpq9vV9tiRLEqWPeMJU5nFcb97L4AGh5so8UzinqbVeI2t1r3spn-wT84SDarEEodjRXPfYpzkt4VJrpLNNQc/s1600-h/Bridge+1.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvn-3WAcLHTPWot6Aw4vdkbI0hdNMOZXYNzfCVjHfqjz1ihOIoq2j6ChYYpq9vV9tiRLEqWPeMJU5nFcb97L4AGh5so8UzinqbVeI2t1r3spn-wT84SDarEEodjRXPfYpzkt4VJrpLNNQc/s320/Bridge+1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441266647073477634" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />In the last few months I've really taken up my passion for cycling. It is hard to help loving this sport since my father, an avid rider, has immersed me in the culture. Dad raised me to appreciate the honesty and hard work of cycling. It can often be a meditative and individual activity. We Cherry bikers are endurance riders, choosing to set a moderate pace and keep it up for hours on end. And we believe in wearing wool at all times and temperatures since it's the original cycling fabric. I was decked out in a purple turtleneck and, of course, <a href="http://bluebearclothing.com">Blue Bear</a> merino tights <br /><br />Yesterday, in homage to my father, I went on the first epic ride of my adult life, 26 miles round trip from Providence to Warren, a quaint seaside town along Narragansett Bay. I rode on the East Bay Bike Path, which largely follows old train tracks that stay close to the shore line. Suffice to say the road was flat and the scenery was mesmerizing. <br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEityxdIh8g8ZMMDaM3jBx-hu9BrXbKgY7SrlY2uKEqmAOQ8EmoUMaQBdCzf5B_LebETWIwSHYpepGF1_K8gWPRcSjXiBQp1t1qXACTG4FIJY5wfthBxz25s1Ps3zSNaUns2yt-E1VG_zAcl/s1600-h/Horizon.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEityxdIh8g8ZMMDaM3jBx-hu9BrXbKgY7SrlY2uKEqmAOQ8EmoUMaQBdCzf5B_LebETWIwSHYpepGF1_K8gWPRcSjXiBQp1t1qXACTG4FIJY5wfthBxz25s1Ps3zSNaUns2yt-E1VG_zAcl/s400/Horizon.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441268941259556002" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />I started late in the afternoon, about 3:30, so on the way I home I was racing against the sun. That's another thing about Dad and I, we like to push the limits a little, it makes us feel alive. I battled a chilly headwind back into town, with Providence's skyline beckoning me home and the red sun sinking behind the hills across the bay. <br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisOU70BF2X5PhdOgDM95YMQNCSzxAvdp573U_K3883kxkTUCDqDXwZZjW6W7FWNttQdVnT74BJ7dEMDA6n3AbfU6E8zlbVIhns5UQLCzQEz4lB86Y7dBFyJLSBXBFaPrspJkXiTi4lqXv7/s1600-h/Lighthouse+Sunset+2.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisOU70BF2X5PhdOgDM95YMQNCSzxAvdp573U_K3883kxkTUCDqDXwZZjW6W7FWNttQdVnT74BJ7dEMDA6n3AbfU6E8zlbVIhns5UQLCzQEz4lB86Y7dBFyJLSBXBFaPrspJkXiTi4lqXv7/s320/Lighthouse+Sunset+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441266789027320754" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhatKzT1J7zpg6hY6O-Uv_nySFAAm2lVSJ2g7Iq9caVMCtkjwvhHGwr9FSa8xN0hVzfX3ytYKxCEZXR9tGMfziX5awEAWel-qD9lZDSMYt9y5nGYKWlgWnZ88TiUxwWTT5p2SMwWSw7_2uo/s1600-h/Sunset+Skyline.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhatKzT1J7zpg6hY6O-Uv_nySFAAm2lVSJ2g7Iq9caVMCtkjwvhHGwr9FSa8xN0hVzfX3ytYKxCEZXR9tGMfziX5awEAWel-qD9lZDSMYt9y5nGYKWlgWnZ88TiUxwWTT5p2SMwWSw7_2uo/s320/Sunset+Skyline.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441267012418953906" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Emmaline Designs as a blog may be morphing into a commentary about how I am designing my life. After months of being a delinquent poster, I'm taking a few extra minutes this morning to do a very, VERY brief update!<br /><br />This summer has been rainy, busy, inspiring and tiring. I'm sure it's a similar story for all y'all out there. For emmalinedesigns, the biggest adventure has been my first two showings at the Boston South End Open Market. Yes, I finally set up my wares and sold straight to the public. It's quite a lot of logistical planning to essentially build a boutique in an hour and then break it down 6 hours later! It has been a success in that I'm learning a lot about what people want to buy (things that are pink. aprons. cookies) and how they like to shop. Great experiences!<br /><br />However, my total sales have not met my goals so that is a bummer. But practice makes perfect so I have to get back up on that horse and try again! I know I will for sure be showing at a 2 day event in September, but more on that later. In the meantime, a few photos to sate your curiosity!<br /><br />And, as always, thank you for your love & support of my little venture.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihlPHIf8zRVd9SJRiqXR4cQ124ZpbW5CIedcSJVSaGgyjfcyRjjwlwntM4P4LGyyDJjThyphenhyphenXY94ineqqZDOIfBbbrw27Hm1_m-U44EaIR_EKaIzWyAE9lmOS0IieZMYzedc7pctYfqEN69f/s1600-h/Dress+Form.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihlPHIf8zRVd9SJRiqXR4cQ124ZpbW5CIedcSJVSaGgyjfcyRjjwlwntM4P4LGyyDJjThyphenhyphenXY94ineqqZDOIfBbbrw27Hm1_m-U44EaIR_EKaIzWyAE9lmOS0IieZMYzedc7pctYfqEN69f/s320/Dress+Form.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5364952220519963010" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2_15eHWr2JyMYPimTJQAWgsfkalLOWcaFknuQfZSnBfUvGHdNhBoYgseW1u4V2zxBuGD1v0sO5kYAQo3AvRNGLXBcUzcRAwinH694kfZbAjYIUOz5PPDJCLW2lTuTksufm2sgfSV5-CRQ/s1600-h/Bag+Table+A.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2_15eHWr2JyMYPimTJQAWgsfkalLOWcaFknuQfZSnBfUvGHdNhBoYgseW1u4V2zxBuGD1v0sO5kYAQo3AvRNGLXBcUzcRAwinH694kfZbAjYIUOz5PPDJCLW2lTuTksufm2sgfSV5-CRQ/s320/Bag+Table+A.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5364952151618499810" border="0" /></a>LEAHCHERRYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15187346962614427562noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3825571222156902892.post-79140009258203732142009-05-18T21:18:00.000-07:002009-05-18T22:03:32.184-07:00Crazy Blogger<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSKIFigsOriNDTe_9Bi0LBBlxxALrze3N_G8Q4O8Wxu29hSrubhzaKfb056vBxWpssAc44u59BVip27BNWk75cytMaYacO5_2uXpoWDb7XsmzmxndQmEiP3SuHWJMSWMzLoZFaxihmMwWy/s1600-h/Fun+Times+Cartwheel.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSKIFigsOriNDTe_9Bi0LBBlxxALrze3N_G8Q4O8Wxu29hSrubhzaKfb056vBxWpssAc44u59BVip27BNWk75cytMaYacO5_2uXpoWDb7XsmzmxndQmEiP3SuHWJMSWMzLoZFaxihmMwWy/s320/Fun+Times+Cartwheel.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337395108683898194" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Hi friends! Inspired by a wonderful Monday evening in which I was given a chance to teach a yoga class I have started another little blog! I have had the idea for quite some time to integrate my love of yoga with my love of knitting. I'm not yet sure how it will all pan out, but I know that I want to generate something with the name <a href="http://www.yogaknits.blogspot.com/">YogaKnits</a>. And I could hardly believe that the email account, Etsy shop and blogspot address were all available! Talk about kismet. The moment I got home from yoga tonight I snagged all three entities and it feels awesome.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1TU8TV8-KNsu6aHuGnkky9Msw-cJD5bVefTLBh2a136Ka9l8jf0kVhzd7E6QK20hyyEaPu1wzuCsedIKVf6GvYNhxNqtW5Jp6GzOAhvyK9uhGA37Z1Ifro3d4ba43AISNELy5IOy1CfP2/s1600-h/HVFF+Yarn+1.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1TU8TV8-KNsu6aHuGnkky9Msw-cJD5bVefTLBh2a136Ka9l8jf0kVhzd7E6QK20hyyEaPu1wzuCsedIKVf6GvYNhxNqtW5Jp6GzOAhvyK9uhGA37Z1Ifro3d4ba43AISNELy5IOy1CfP2/s320/HVFF+Yarn+1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337396192271789282" border="0" /></a><br /><br />I also have fiber happenings to report, of course. Last weekend, on May 9th, I went to the Hudson River Valley for a sheep shearing! The <a href="http://www.fiberfarm.com/">Martha's Vineyard Fiber Farm</a> is a wonderful venture that offers knitters a chance to participate in the fiber fun by purchasing a share of wool in the form of roving or spun yarn. I honestly don't know as much about this as some of my friends, but I do know that the idea is to follow the tenets of Community Supported Agriculture, the types of food collectives that have sprung up around the country to help connect people to the farms that supply our sustenance. I have long been a huge fan of gardening, organics, and the <a href="http://www.slowfood.com/">Slow Food</a> movement. This awesome fiber farm fits right in to the bigger picture of building a healthy and satisfying relationship with our precious natural environment.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7cm9qipMuidArYCMYM3DGVfIa72K9u8dUL_I2wy8hMmiMx3Bg7hwtqS_6wywYEJOR3A_g6p0VpNroUJqVXc2m-1utO_Im3RNcYsd5q5_LWStAjp0qXocbmrA0kUqXmVX2SA1PNeGDHyNH/s1600-h/Shearing+Action.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7cm9qipMuidArYCMYM3DGVfIa72K9u8dUL_I2wy8hMmiMx3Bg7hwtqS_6wywYEJOR3A_g6p0VpNroUJqVXc2m-1utO_Im3RNcYsd5q5_LWStAjp0qXocbmrA0kUqXmVX2SA1PNeGDHyNH/s200/Shearing+Action.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337393574573986706" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQVadRkEvWeGXXep_cRNCciR8RXdOaueTuaEURFSMpoVrgpWHqaCTdV6Prr5TUZ2L2D_ZnoOXwnzvn0CTuVst1aKix954QjxkPfhu5FznjgAaSHrH0Ss8YodADzTqp1C2QJ5yEqPx1ZyCO/s1600-h/Tiny+Sheep.jpg"> <img style="cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQVadRkEvWeGXXep_cRNCciR8RXdOaueTuaEURFSMpoVrgpWHqaCTdV6Prr5TUZ2L2D_ZnoOXwnzvn0CTuVst1aKix954QjxkPfhu5FznjgAaSHrH0Ss8YodADzTqp1C2QJ5yEqPx1ZyCO/s200/Tiny+Sheep.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337393114251410130" border="0" /></a><br /><br />But it's not just all philosophy, it is downright fun! I've been busy as a bee and enjoying life, spurts of great weather, time with friends, and readying myself for my upcoming trip to Arizona.<br /><br />The blossoms are out on all the trees and I'm loving the New England foliage that we just don't have in California. I don't think I've ever seen a dogwood tree and it has quickly become my favorite flower. I have been interested in the philosophies of Tibetan Buddhism for many years and was very moved to hear them delivered by such a great man and thinker. The sound of the Dalai Lama's laughter was absolutely heartwarming and inspiring. I was taken with an incredible sense of calm and presence that seemed to emanate from him even across hundreds of yards and 16,000 other beings.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi39PBmCerPzdq78-VRIPBbCZZ6UjDQB3_qsbx_I2E5W-R3gmiiD8xlRTnFARvtIYXudBQ0BrNA9KM1WAZfr790lYjft4NYMdPRTyOH7nw8UJLpsPhZzayfWAXd6zlAcZSm4rIh5pvQ0HOl/s1600-h/Dalai+Lama+Patriots.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi39PBmCerPzdq78-VRIPBbCZZ6UjDQB3_qsbx_I2E5W-R3gmiiD8xlRTnFARvtIYXudBQ0BrNA9KM1WAZfr790lYjft4NYMdPRTyOH7nw8UJLpsPhZzayfWAXd6zlAcZSm4rIh5pvQ0HOl/s320/Dalai+Lama+Patriots.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5334753729004164626" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZSZwjVn-f8ztCHjg-adq-7pAYGmrX2C18SRIiloHA0S4h1_pvAnbJ2LDok9MMv5Ah_z6fq5g_SHrpgY1wchXbvwEDVeFTVoJf72FzDc-V8Anp1zefnxDrHE5YiWmICcf459XK6-An92Go/s1600-h/Dalai+in+Robes.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZSZwjVn-f8ztCHjg-adq-7pAYGmrX2C18SRIiloHA0S4h1_pvAnbJ2LDok9MMv5Ah_z6fq5g_SHrpgY1wchXbvwEDVeFTVoJf72FzDc-V8Anp1zefnxDrHE5YiWmICcf459XK6-An92Go/s320/Dalai+in+Robes.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5334753846757320722" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />The event benefitted the <a href="http://www.bostontibet.org/about.html">Tibetan Association of Boston</a> and their efforts to build a new Tibetan Cultural Association. The Dalai Lama seemed to enjoy himself as well...he seemed to relish putting on a New England Patriots cap as he started his keynote speech on the Path to Peace and Happiness. The wish of Buddhists is to find an end to their suffering and the suffering of all other sentient beings. So I leave you with my own wish for your happiness, joy, and fulfillment in life!LEAHCHERRYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15187346962614427562noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3825571222156902892.post-16086245581874293712009-04-16T19:37:00.000-07:002009-04-18T22:06:09.997-07:00Fresh Designs<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgztvwnox4tZgWKpwpFHAdxeA8652BsyQVhnSaTJ7t3G7gYewFkH-Xztac_d3DuYN-BC37DOyF5_ce7Y6EwsxmqDIgVLAeujknbDVDfZMLaSGloI1OBDXE4QQGfB0RC6iFUp3uIEV9lERBk/s1600-h/Goat+Moxie+Tote.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgztvwnox4tZgWKpwpFHAdxeA8652BsyQVhnSaTJ7t3G7gYewFkH-Xztac_d3DuYN-BC37DOyF5_ce7Y6EwsxmqDIgVLAeujknbDVDfZMLaSGloI1OBDXE4QQGfB0RC6iFUp3uIEV9lERBk/s320/Goat+Moxie+Tote.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5326264306484941138" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />I'm really excited about the new designs that I'm working on here in the studio as I get ready for the Boston South End Open Market and all the other craft shows that I hope to participate in this year.<br /><br />All the aspects of my process are delightful to me: designing graphics, screenprinting, sewing, and choosing colors for inks and bags and linings. The hard part, as a one woman show, is to be as efficient and effective as possible. I have to thank my friend Christina for recommending a great shortcut - making a digital mock up for new screen designs! As I'm working on the graphics, I import my image into photoshop and place the new design on an existing bag. It's pretty awesome.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrQbQlfw3KN82JdbJx_vLIL5vvJ_ylUhGjoSlZVGG-CMLmKyr_s3w2RY0pAcInT_KJOKkvGqZVeYpqhBjq_VEPBvHJeFHtFqw92uwcAZdDZr0KrZ2-Hk6z7zJMla1l2fFKgwEz5rI4UOot/s1600-h/Flower+Burst+Tote.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrQbQlfw3KN82JdbJx_vLIL5vvJ_ylUhGjoSlZVGG-CMLmKyr_s3w2RY0pAcInT_KJOKkvGqZVeYpqhBjq_VEPBvHJeFHtFqw92uwcAZdDZr0KrZ2-Hk6z7zJMla1l2fFKgwEz5rI4UOot/s320/Flower+Burst+Tote.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5326264152861896482" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />These samples are incredibly rough drafts, but it's a sneak peek into what I'm working on! It's a young age, I know, but it's also a very real feeling that my twenties are, in fact, coming to an end. In preparation for today I made a list of my accomplishments since last year. I think it's a good way to appreciate where I am and to be grateful for all that I have and have done. Here are a few highlights:<br /><br />Got accepted into a Masters program at ASU (though I didn't enroll)<br />Moved from Phoenix to Providence without having a job lined up<br />Bought my first bed frame<br />Opened my Etsy shop<br />Learned how to drive in the snow<br />Gave myself permission to relax!<br />Learned how to screenprint<br />Got a really cute new phone<br />Started writing my business plan<br /><br />My philosophy in life is that there is no place to arrive, no real finish line to cross. It's not what you have, it's what you do and how you act in any circumstance that defines your self and your character. 29 is just another number and another opportunity to create an exciting and fulfilling year!<br /><br />And above all, I am so grateful for all the amazing family and friends I have in my life. I love you all and appreciate you more than you could ever know.<br />Cheers!LEAHCHERRYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15187346962614427562noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3825571222156902892.post-27967337268465365092009-04-08T16:39:00.001-07:002009-04-08T16:57:24.999-07:00Weekend ProjectsAnother hectic and productive week. Though I battled a persistent cold this week I managed to have lots of adventures and make some new work. I am definitely a branch from the workaholic side of the Cherry Family Tree. We don't really understand the idea of "resting" or "relaxing." This is definitely one of the reasons I knit - to keep my hands working at all times.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil0NbUTtcBff5p6xzFWfB-QKM7fwiiEnBNUNqEs4GZGd7ZcDG5oiQCQQWIDW18kSLGCyCc-Bp155fzk-3_eIs579qAIe8NCJwc1y0exCUri7Ds3CEqwpH5BLZBUyRTkNHvwQcCZ7MMs3Rj/s1600-h/Fern+Shell.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil0NbUTtcBff5p6xzFWfB-QKM7fwiiEnBNUNqEs4GZGd7ZcDG5oiQCQQWIDW18kSLGCyCc-Bp155fzk-3_eIs579qAIe8NCJwc1y0exCUri7Ds3CEqwpH5BLZBUyRTkNHvwQcCZ7MMs3Rj/s320/Fern+Shell.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5322471217997394322" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz5oY-QZLc3Sa9tX8Bxl_TgEz4oFlaVCPEdiuXX-iUQ5AO49PWS0X5H1Ud5n6YdLodh-lah2BjhVJl3x-4pPhPsXJsrQ0d7rxIUPjXMl-t5tdOdiCmCBANAM10krLm7ah9xNxvWv71FuWA/s1600-h/Turtle+Squash.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz5oY-QZLc3Sa9tX8Bxl_TgEz4oFlaVCPEdiuXX-iUQ5AO49PWS0X5H1Ud5n6YdLodh-lah2BjhVJl3x-4pPhPsXJsrQ0d7rxIUPjXMl-t5tdOdiCmCBANAM10krLm7ah9xNxvWv71FuWA/s320/Turtle+Squash.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5322471319732355826" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />In my efforts to create new imagery for my screenprints I visited the <a href="http://www.risd.edu/nature.cfm">RISD Nature Lab</a>. The lab was founded in 1937 and has an amazing collection of dried plants, bones, shells, and yes, taxonomied animals. I was a little nervous when I picked up a dried out turtle and it was really unpleasant opening the case full of dried crabs and seahorses. Think of a package of dried cuttlefish - overwhelmingly salty! So I found myself sticking to pieces of dried fruit and seed pods and other flora.<br /><br />I also used my weekend to test a needle case design for double pointed sets. These little guys get lost all the time and I wanted a small case that can wrangle them in style. I love the look of the prototype but it needs a top flap to keep the needles from slipping out when the case is closed up. I had a near disaster in the car the first day! So it's back to the drawing board.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipxh0BG1pYL83WPKtXHBzVaKTYLyWKjU6tM-sagOTSlS6SE8rgCgSeWpJTX77DztJNyf55nRdZBzf-y9XZjorFcz2Dq3_fXO_fdA8dE9wvpducNlc2FPIu6mBp3QK6drso3XUIVc7ujtN8/s1600-h/Needle+Case+1.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipxh0BG1pYL83WPKtXHBzVaKTYLyWKjU6tM-sagOTSlS6SE8rgCgSeWpJTX77DztJNyf55nRdZBzf-y9XZjorFcz2Dq3_fXO_fdA8dE9wvpducNlc2FPIu6mBp3QK6drso3XUIVc7ujtN8/s320/Needle+Case+1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5322471133844075234" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS2M5oTa9DDiSSM2MFsl_kLSdFuIDPehwDmAhlbbV32IC4kz_nTjsiYdHDVEzOi_wEqq1V1g0IiZpnxrp7O3UXtaqrl8kUN41q3_PtYR7325YGA2xucK7uqS0Dr-VJe90fJReG-OJXBvX8/s1600-h/Needle+Case+2.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS2M5oTa9DDiSSM2MFsl_kLSdFuIDPehwDmAhlbbV32IC4kz_nTjsiYdHDVEzOi_wEqq1V1g0IiZpnxrp7O3UXtaqrl8kUN41q3_PtYR7325YGA2xucK7uqS0Dr-VJe90fJReG-OJXBvX8/s320/Needle+Case+2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5322471047037076114" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />I also want to point out the adorable fruit patterned fabric I used for the pocket. I am a huge lover of all things from <a href="http://www.interweaveknits.com/">Interweave Press</a> and I found a great cardigan pattern from Ann Budd's upcoming book, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Simple-Style-Innovative-Traditional-Techniques/dp/1596680903">Simple Style</a>. The design is by <a href="http://cecilyam.wordpress.com/">Cecily Glowik MacDonald</a>. She makes the most darling patterns and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next! By the way, the pattern was also published in the Winter 2008 copy of Knitscene, as pictured here.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVWYsJecirekE-g0XJ6JXGThxo92hif_4HFrMJu4VdYjh3o7v1gGvqkbD8tkN5sJk4jxWeSYedQRJQ1G5-1r2QhFRSudYoHcErUdluL5qJh2jrPiiYMDYH1aNcjAvPsAPCmzh3tEhb9ZGq/s1600-h/CardiganStart.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVWYsJecirekE-g0XJ6JXGThxo92hif_4HFrMJu4VdYjh3o7v1gGvqkbD8tkN5sJk4jxWeSYedQRJQ1G5-1r2QhFRSudYoHcErUdluL5qJh2jrPiiYMDYH1aNcjAvPsAPCmzh3tEhb9ZGq/s320/CardiganStart.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5319553629303408482" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />It has been far too long since I tackled a sweater project! I've been spending my time and yarn dollars on hats, scarves, and gloves lately. I fell in love with this pattern, an adorable round yoke design which lets you knit the body in one piece on a circular needle. I decided to swap out yarns (as I always do) and snapped up five balls of Lambs Pride Super Wash in Japanese Plum, a delicious deep purple color. Though I did knit a swatch in the beginning, I haven't checked my gauge since I started knitting, which is bad, but things seem to be going very well so far! The color is wacky because I took one photo at night with bad lighting. But I just had to show everyone that progress is indeed being made!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwEyziFnm9YjMgcFHqJBYiKTh-YxQgpRZe43U1psdebt-wPhhi0LYBbful_4_9shuJ8QBocV_ChqFPve4Ly6DxMYBMHXz4koJiAUPI3ivxhj4DLW7jiteoGjAaX4y2UAd9SIarvTH1OOWl/s1600-h/Sweater+Progress.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwEyziFnm9YjMgcFHqJBYiKTh-YxQgpRZe43U1psdebt-wPhhi0LYBbful_4_9shuJ8QBocV_ChqFPve4Ly6DxMYBMHXz4koJiAUPI3ivxhj4DLW7jiteoGjAaX4y2UAd9SIarvTH1OOWl/s320/Sweater+Progress.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5319553929418637586" border="0" /></a>LEAHCHERRYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15187346962614427562noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3825571222156902892.post-89884450388057491672009-03-18T20:37:00.000-07:002009-03-18T21:14:56.040-07:00Lime Green Hat<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXGiTahTQnwYI-aVWKVYNiiuHogyvXciEGkfsMCf3tTT3EMZZ3kYwakX54WyjFuBDDecGYeQkP0BQlM1HqMgBG1rEKhOqmnprTISWnkHh0wh545xPgfGXte3zJtuNHAlpBfndiwO683T6w/s1600-h/Front+View.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXGiTahTQnwYI-aVWKVYNiiuHogyvXciEGkfsMCf3tTT3EMZZ3kYwakX54WyjFuBDDecGYeQkP0BQlM1HqMgBG1rEKhOqmnprTISWnkHh0wh545xPgfGXte3zJtuNHAlpBfndiwO683T6w/s320/Front+View.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314740920113037266" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />This first winter in New England was pretty darn rough! Lots and lots of snow, temperatures in the teens, my first pair of rubbery winter boots, and finally, a really good reason to knit. Hats became my favorite winter project because they are so fast and satisfying. I found a really cute pattern on <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/robins-egg-blue-hat">Ravelry</a> for hats with button bands. I wanted a brim that folded up so it would look more like a fabulous French cloche and less of a beanie. So of course I felt the need to completely make up my own pattern and modify it and do my own thing!<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH_auCab5T_OseIcpwg38lYqI0MsmRi6EX84AowU7HR1phn3fqph2MPyCkbjKYF8wAaLf7cbi-lSmmwgIoOKaUQyuwNn2Z3BHUSo2eoYxh6C7rNx3RPNmE23m-AwDbh2TAWmhCVJTgcc1u/s1600-h/Side+Head+View.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH_auCab5T_OseIcpwg38lYqI0MsmRi6EX84AowU7HR1phn3fqph2MPyCkbjKYF8wAaLf7cbi-lSmmwgIoOKaUQyuwNn2Z3BHUSo2eoYxh6C7rNx3RPNmE23m-AwDbh2TAWmhCVJTgcc1u/s320/Side+Head+View.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314740728409090274" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />I found some awesome colors of <a href="http://www.sheepshopyarn.com/default.asp?p=sheep1">Sheep Shop</a> Number 2 on sale at my local yarn shop. I snapped it all up and this newest hat is by far my favorite object of the season. The brim is knit in seed stitch in a flat piece, then you join to knit in the round for the rest of the hat. Once it was all knitted up, I folded the brim up and tacked the extra flap down with a huge wooden button.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5WAin4ISZdOBBZGQ51MHjD608djqiHf4wjgRJosOXZecyLpy5BUB3wOaXiMylQMqIaPckKdwgxjo8LvERCsoko68aW5loNgt9wjEzVchLuGFgJGN63fqyw4gfly77ZEjGLX691o6FY0fi/s1600-h/Hat+%26+Mug.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 134px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5WAin4ISZdOBBZGQ51MHjD608djqiHf4wjgRJosOXZecyLpy5BUB3wOaXiMylQMqIaPckKdwgxjo8LvERCsoko68aW5loNgt9wjEzVchLuGFgJGN63fqyw4gfly77ZEjGLX691o6FY0fi/s200/Hat+%26+Mug.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314740603142104834" border="0" /></a>While I was doing my self-portrait photo session I realized that my new coffee mug looks adorable with my hat! The mug is from <a href="http://www.orlakiely.com/usa/">Orla Kiely's</a> new line of home goods from Target. I hear they're selling out fast so I'm glad I snapped one up while I had the chance. It's a huge mug, practically big enough for soup. But I use it to sip coffee and then tea all day long at work. This is how I manage to stay up so late and wake up so early. Yay for caffeine!LEAHCHERRYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15187346962614427562noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3825571222156902892.post-69258618266722658212009-03-10T20:42:00.000-07:002009-03-10T21:08:08.425-07:00Jellyfish!Has it really been almost a month since my last post? I really hadn't fully realized how busy I've been! Aside from lots and lots of working and cooking, I have been knitting up quite a storm lately. I finished a couple of hats (no photos yet - maybe next post?) and just purchased yarn for a new sweater featured in the latest KnitScene.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicueFQcuf12oDVkGyA4BWjTlJcGUeBMRQYTVD61bDt3wLVFTRj4_J49zg37B2-t9qWgPhZN4Y2UsOGCdySPIOQVDthfmFY10T6nTe56yPA5h9S5YzITwLY1136SWkP9WKHdrJicPU3zf8e/s1600-h/Finished+Butterfly+Totebag.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicueFQcuf12oDVkGyA4BWjTlJcGUeBMRQYTVD61bDt3wLVFTRj4_J49zg37B2-t9qWgPhZN4Y2UsOGCdySPIOQVDthfmFY10T6nTe56yPA5h9S5YzITwLY1136SWkP9WKHdrJicPU3zf8e/s200/Finished+Butterfly+Totebag.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5311774997444011442" border="0" /></a>In the world of emmalinedesigns, I posted a few new items since my last post and I updated etsy to let everyone know that I make knitting bags! After trying out lots of different product ideas, like a yoga tote bag and baby blocks and aprons, I decided that I will focus on my number one love - knitting. I hope I can eventually give attention to all my other concepts and designs, but in the meantime I want to play with the graphics for the bags and add some more bells and whistles so that I am offering the coolest knitting totebag you can find! Click to <a href="http://www.emmalinedesigns.etsy.com/">check it out</a>.<br /><br />I've recently been really obsessed with jellyfish and I went to the <a href="http://www.neaq.org/">New England Aquarium</a> last weekend to do some up close and personal research. These creatures are magical and repellent at the same time! I took photos of the prettiest ones:<br /><br />These big, blue blobs on the left look amazing in their large group, like glowy, floaty pillows in the dark. And I love the long, wispy tentacles on this pair of sea nettles. They look like they're nearly dancing, and they're definitely having fun (if only they had brains!).<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeeE-Yd0Djrnx1NrN94zK9mf2dPQRCeeyki0Tt5JnNRP1KUy8nxyW3PTMBubbBOW7xKrwXuacH_8DLkpVd03uU84amS5iNBxPjr-_jMJB_-jS3qGM8WWfYibiPiiDqnwOUZk_bEHmEPHFo/s1600-h/Dark+Blue+Jellies.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeeE-Yd0Djrnx1NrN94zK9mf2dPQRCeeyki0Tt5JnNRP1KUy8nxyW3PTMBubbBOW7xKrwXuacH_8DLkpVd03uU84amS5iNBxPjr-_jMJB_-jS3qGM8WWfYibiPiiDqnwOUZk_bEHmEPHFo/s200/Dark+Blue+Jellies.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5311773979548145586" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpkU43bxTo3oACJSee8dGceK29L-JmoQuETeRV0P-zQRarHLQPlzQp2FSxcEVLklaKgzdiLurvZSCjnnoGUEQo7rKdZeIOhjefO9JUCJe6ltioFgSm5x7n0B-5EFATi7jehfjRumUu9M33/s1600-h/NE+Aquarium+Jellyfish+Pair.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpkU43bxTo3oACJSee8dGceK29L-JmoQuETeRV0P-zQRarHLQPlzQp2FSxcEVLklaKgzdiLurvZSCjnnoGUEQo7rKdZeIOhjefO9JUCJe6ltioFgSm5x7n0B-5EFATi7jehfjRumUu9M33/s200/NE+Aquarium+Jellyfish+Pair.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5311773767425920066" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />And here is my beginning attempt at actually drawing these awesome creatures!<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0sZIn-4h7FyX0KMXdFjTZizp3L_NLMjd9qw8HF-0kvzhlfxkApeWlcW8gjcxYtx-9SbIsid3GkJCdHi5oBXBgV_WypIt0EBWnFQDIRIUkOrqYr3f-Y1OBu4Ff4_WFcAcUMQIKB-Xxk7-d/s1600-h/JELLY+1.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 161px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0sZIn-4h7FyX0KMXdFjTZizp3L_NLMjd9qw8HF-0kvzhlfxkApeWlcW8gjcxYtx-9SbIsid3GkJCdHi5oBXBgV_WypIt0EBWnFQDIRIUkOrqYr3f-Y1OBu4Ff4_WFcAcUMQIKB-Xxk7-d/s320/JELLY+1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5311773020315643666" border="0" /></a><br />In a little design brainstorming with my sister she told me a great story about swimming somewhere in Israel and a man told her the jellyfish there are "sweet" He was trying to explain that they were not poisonous and wouldn't sting her. I hope everyone had a lovely Saturday with their sweeties and loved ones.<br /><br />With most of the snow finally thawing and some days reaching nearly 5o degrees, I'm getting eager for my first New England spring. I'm finding myself drawn to brighter colors and lighter textures in anticipation of warmer weather. On a recent trip to my favorite fabric store, I picked up a gorgeous assortment of peach linen, robin's egg blue twill, shell pink silk, and lime green linen. The soft pastels look wonderful next to brighter accessories like the purple ribbon and orange zipper that I'll use to make a new round of bags and pouches. <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxJcXAr8v03PJpJsWj-yjMN_SuS8Bu73L816fOxYB0UXTy4StmQYdt7hvRB74aafai1N-9MnauiyZQYqBTYKCyKwRKR91981B2zpjxecYusbd6WJkvNRsgPwsuwYurFI-iru1Nrs-WTZDq/s1600-h/Spring+Fabrics.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxJcXAr8v03PJpJsWj-yjMN_SuS8Bu73L816fOxYB0UXTy4StmQYdt7hvRB74aafai1N-9MnauiyZQYqBTYKCyKwRKR91981B2zpjxecYusbd6WJkvNRsgPwsuwYurFI-iru1Nrs-WTZDq/s320/Spring+Fabrics.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302915584598502514" border="0" /></a><br /><br />I was especially excited about finding the lime green linen because it is one of my favorite colors and textures. I was so in love that I bought the whole bolt! I feel like a 'real' textile artist to have a bolt instead of just a cut piece of fabric. It's uniquely luxurious and gratifying. I am almost finished with a sweet kitchen apron I made with it and I know it will make its way into the linings of my tote bags.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQsFjzw8TutBeEML8ymhbLvXoAdusvH2NhPsizyG2IG-XK5egJcEf_MoLvPFbmUXAeJmmv2Yw2-Ogaf6Vn2u6eHECYbRvUToXzbDRQG9v9JD2VLsBfi-UBSZ8EwUmXwEG6eP0OaLpBv5fA/s1600-h/Linen+Bolt.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQsFjzw8TutBeEML8ymhbLvXoAdusvH2NhPsizyG2IG-XK5egJcEf_MoLvPFbmUXAeJmmv2Yw2-Ogaf6Vn2u6eHECYbRvUToXzbDRQG9v9JD2VLsBfi-UBSZ8EwUmXwEG6eP0OaLpBv5fA/s320/Linen+Bolt.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302916089905265698" border="0" /></a><br /><br />On the knitting front, I'm slaving away at several projects at once, including this green lace scarf that was started months ago. It is slow going on size 3 Addi Turbo lace needles. But the color is that amazing yellow, limey green and htat's what keeps me knitting. The yarn is Malabrigo lace weight one-ply merino wool and it is beautifully soft. I can't wait to finish and wear it for spring!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVwg7PdHlw_xumJk4PMC3Ykd7yeo3a-5vzijJUWrK-tbSEPv8AJXg64mwxY3qBWQg1PxoQtxK1m7TKdiCIgrqI6k8Y4_OXFLBtOmJ7JYUjk1l10Y77edjJhyg3FljoTKMG2rgsJrf9kfdQ/s1600-h/Green+Lace+Scarf.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVwg7PdHlw_xumJk4PMC3Ykd7yeo3a-5vzijJUWrK-tbSEPv8AJXg64mwxY3qBWQg1PxoQtxK1m7TKdiCIgrqI6k8Y4_OXFLBtOmJ7JYUjk1l10Y77edjJhyg3FljoTKMG2rgsJrf9kfdQ/s320/Green+Lace+Scarf.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302915880524016034" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7-UYC-LT61PztSzcnio0uOAgFZlkw9_9Dpc7UQ6ufvtqp_QH4vjSMcxEP_KHnTZHyTCQyz_hvINXpLbqjOBttEywi31aKEvYrXAvE4MgULkUvvyF6wCnH4xicOPiGldlDLhTBP2e67YCP/s1600-h/Green+Lace+Scarf+Backlit.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7-UYC-LT61PztSzcnio0uOAgFZlkw9_9Dpc7UQ6ufvtqp_QH4vjSMcxEP_KHnTZHyTCQyz_hvINXpLbqjOBttEywi31aKEvYrXAvE4MgULkUvvyF6wCnH4xicOPiGldlDLhTBP2e67YCP/s320/Green+Lace+Scarf+Backlit.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302915726862683522" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Stay tuned for lots of new finished products, including my yoga tote which I am so excited about!LEAHCHERRYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15187346962614427562noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3825571222156902892.post-23061453005070314572009-02-06T22:05:00.000-08:002009-02-07T14:38:03.368-08:00New York City<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA8-6A5Fb-RQ_y0u-RBz4PGs4maCYNoNhaRItviuhQKOYP2qaM01atHz5isC3HICl5RZPo5Fmxc0uOFwVZp5sDoWyPh3ZUaXBeo77DiVMGBrxylsoCoEuxnWq25KIELlYhsd3pVwDwhX-c/s1600-h/Skyline.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA8-6A5Fb-RQ_y0u-RBz4PGs4maCYNoNhaRItviuhQKOYP2qaM01atHz5isC3HICl5RZPo5Fmxc0uOFwVZp5sDoWyPh3ZUaXBeo77DiVMGBrxylsoCoEuxnWq25KIELlYhsd3pVwDwhX-c/s320/Skyline.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300187541776232674" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />So I had my second Manhattan adventure and it was fantastic and exciting. Due to my awesome job at Rag&Bone, I was able to attend the New York International Gift Fair at the Javitz Convention Center. Our booth was absolutely fabulous and in the prestigious and lovely Studio Section of the show. I wanted to check out the show as part of my "market research" efforts for emmalinedesigns. I was fully expecting to see things that looked like my work, but fortunately, I did not! Of course that just means that people who make handmade, screenprinted bags are probably showing at smaller, crafty type venues since it is very time consuming and therefore hard to offer at wholesale prices and in large quantity.<br /><br />I got to meet the lovely ladies of <a href="http://www.hellolucky.com/">Hello, Lucky!</a>, a beautiful line of screenprinted goods based in San Francisco. I was also excited about seeing the full line from the NY firm <a href="http://www.hableconstruction.com/">Hable Construction</a>. I've been eyeing their screenprinted canvas totes since I first saw them at the <a href="http://www.persimmon-shop.com/">Persimmon</a> boutique in Hawi, Hawaii. The gift show was as huge as I thought it would be, and after running a short marathon up and down the aisles, I decided to hit the streets and head down to Soho.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwisN2Hqt155wzhl_d0gS-5xGAofY922S7QYjQP1jb-VcYHlO1vme9-dnKrukd5z50tmbD8Bwu2uW10RPxy78pGG1RXefE1j7XjGFkmw2ogZwIw9EPErt3cIZZc0AkPkNREHv-mC_rOLwG/s1600-h/Purl+Soho.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwisN2Hqt155wzhl_d0gS-5xGAofY922S7QYjQP1jb-VcYHlO1vme9-dnKrukd5z50tmbD8Bwu2uW10RPxy78pGG1RXefE1j7XjGFkmw2ogZwIw9EPErt3cIZZc0AkPkNREHv-mC_rOLwG/s320/Purl+Soho.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300185240793188626" border="0" /></a>I was hoping to make the most of my few hours in the city and my first destination was to Sullivan Street to visit Purl for yarn and Purl Patchwork for fabric. Even though I restrained myself from making any purchases, I loved seeing all the yummy colors of yarn and the fun printed linens from Kokka. My favorite had cars on a purple background - so fun!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix8crSZebtaxqgNL9Oa1qhWsCJAMGmL4tDYYpYCVckKVnDCYY0rhjSeggSZSrUgwfhW1XnA-yxoqyX5TA9zKln3czvDkcKGhm_mNgUP49ff1-GLqe_qWqRYodqox9tGLvDoce2rM6O7ApI/s1600-h/KokkaFabric.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix8crSZebtaxqgNL9Oa1qhWsCJAMGmL4tDYYpYCVckKVnDCYY0rhjSeggSZSrUgwfhW1XnA-yxoqyX5TA9zKln3czvDkcKGhm_mNgUP49ff1-GLqe_qWqRYodqox9tGLvDoce2rM6O7ApI/s200/KokkaFabric.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300183651221448738" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />I headed East (which I thought was South because I totally don't understand New York yet) I found myself at the New Museum of Modern Art on the Bowery. I got my trusty ASU school ID out for a student discount. I love that card for not having an expiration date! The exhibit was great - modern paintings by <a href="http://www.newmuseum.org/exhibitions/401">Mary Heilmann</a>, but I swear it was the bathroom tile that was worth the price of admission!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgni-XKUx-IMr7J-iPvejRzNl7YsyBqjrOsk4sK_ZIPzsqEeqdG600W8Ytuj3Eqgwadi61ty0niDVw2nJ3-FfPH5KZ8ZCzA4XZq114B7Lk4lLXDSvkIfrWxD4K2z_QMS9Ce_WNTyzXtIKPD/s1600-h/New+Museum+Tile.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgni-XKUx-IMr7J-iPvejRzNl7YsyBqjrOsk4sK_ZIPzsqEeqdG600W8Ytuj3Eqgwadi61ty0niDVw2nJ3-FfPH5KZ8ZCzA4XZq114B7Lk4lLXDSvkIfrWxD4K2z_QMS9Ce_WNTyzXtIKPD/s320/New+Museum+Tile.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300184619918469826" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />I took some other photos of inspiring New York sights, a mural in a school playground that looks like broken glass and a huge cluster of balloons hanging from a tree like gigantic colorful grapes. We have both been on pins and needles throughout the primaries and listened to hours and hours of NPR during the race with McCain. As a student of political science and a budding entrepreneur, I feel personally invested in the fate of our nation and I believe that we finally got this election right and have a great man taking office.<br /><br />The trip to DC was awesome, cold, and exciting! I met new friends, walked miles and miles around town, visited my cousin Teresa, and joined the millions of people on the National Mall to watch the inauguration on Tuesday morning. Sunday night we arrived in town and after settling into the apartment of our friend from California, our first stop was the Washington Monument. We were there on Monday and Tuesday, too, so it very much felt like the home base for our trip. Then, on Monday, we went out to Takoma Park and had lunch with our second cousin, Teresa Rainey. She has an adorable dog and adorable house and I hadn't seen her in ages so it was great to catch up.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIYE251VunGqwm-X77Fj4G9VwbD-28MMiIo-38GgR7K9NFVPsuvLIG2gwTPQEfVwd0nsTNP4TULRWXTBJJ1xCi385YgWVVvdESRxPKZkftjvdK9n40B24euu0nf3Bry4yKyfkW3lliF_VU/s1600-h/WashMonument+Night.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIYE251VunGqwm-X77Fj4G9VwbD-28MMiIo-38GgR7K9NFVPsuvLIG2gwTPQEfVwd0nsTNP4TULRWXTBJJ1xCi385YgWVVvdESRxPKZkftjvdK9n40B24euu0nf3Bry4yKyfkW3lliF_VU/s320/WashMonument+Night.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298418635450935986" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBB4CuDWo6VuraIPrc33j99Q8IAIR8KIRbRm_aU54-gei_7R39kpnIRI-GSp5lndCd6a42Zc26z9DB7iR6suMk6KTB1dBSDX9ZJGhRKQGVtbNYuWExa1VEuJ7me7UTN8m6_pE14-JzsNOk/s1600-h/Teresa+and+Leah.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBB4CuDWo6VuraIPrc33j99Q8IAIR8KIRbRm_aU54-gei_7R39kpnIRI-GSp5lndCd6a42Zc26z9DB7iR6suMk6KTB1dBSDX9ZJGhRKQGVtbNYuWExa1VEuJ7me7UTN8m6_pE14-JzsNOk/s320/Teresa+and+Leah.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298424718283400930" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />The day before the inauguration we milled around the mall and hit all the major points of interest, quickly. This was our chance to get up close to the capitol building and see all the flags and swags and what not decorating the arches. We didn't really go inside anything - security and lines and crowds were totally prohibitive! Nah, we just burned calories by walking the vast expanses between the gorgeous buildings. Isn't the capitol building so small? And that's me trying to look especially fab on the steps of the Supreme Court. Let's get some really lefty judges in there and make some ch-ch-ch-changes. <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1O-ulexkURC_JArz84i9DbvgKupDkJJwx0DEY2300sw9FkeG7_t1ulOVex0pyyupDwzz43YJSc_auQuv0mV8O5ra_ggsrN3JMP4dKsPx6Qc3oonsgm2D7A27eL35JmkiJBpu1wAdVwo2L/s1600-h/Capitol+Flag+Detail.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1O-ulexkURC_JArz84i9DbvgKupDkJJwx0DEY2300sw9FkeG7_t1ulOVex0pyyupDwzz43YJSc_auQuv0mV8O5ra_ggsrN3JMP4dKsPx6Qc3oonsgm2D7A27eL35JmkiJBpu1wAdVwo2L/s320/Capitol+Flag+Detail.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298419996588163410" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWi8lNKw6asCSjd2fbps3RusFbQekua3O-bYJevSGxYP_eggk5JyqeHw0d1c7SI1foK8pJmFihIeV8xcXaHVmqMRHvOdBxa1BNayDXyShgJnREJRl5wwjP-oCBrNMmH_EtspGGK2FABlsQ/s1600-h/Supreme+Court.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWi8lNKw6asCSjd2fbps3RusFbQekua3O-bYJevSGxYP_eggk5JyqeHw0d1c7SI1foK8pJmFihIeV8xcXaHVmqMRHvOdBxa1BNayDXyShgJnREJRl5wwjP-oCBrNMmH_EtspGGK2FABlsQ/s320/Supreme+Court.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298420267254969906" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiP7VMCcjlDIWn24bWIoekqR7zURtBvRcXL4PejEihLYGTKyoNvtVR-gGTh0LiauQ0jNja8aPCsjQi_ZecpNq56ne4LpLni3AV-XST31trM7hIL7BjCEi0Jg-Md8TgcPHI6PAKV3L5EGeoN/s1600-h/Tiny+Capitol.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiP7VMCcjlDIWn24bWIoekqR7zURtBvRcXL4PejEihLYGTKyoNvtVR-gGTh0LiauQ0jNja8aPCsjQi_ZecpNq56ne4LpLni3AV-XST31trM7hIL7BjCEi0Jg-Md8TgcPHI6PAKV3L5EGeoN/s320/Tiny+Capitol.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298420551385437954" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />On the big day, we got up super early, went to four wrong places before finally figuring out we needed to walk about two miles around the mall to get near the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument, which is where we watched a big Obama on giant jumbotrons! And in the evening, exhausted but still excited, we had dinner at the famed Ben's Chili Bowl. Sorry to say the food was not awesome, but it was pretty cool to be there anyway! Note that there is a red, white, and blue Obama ice sculpture behind us - the folks at Bens love Obama. They even added him to the list of people they serve for free (the only other person on that list is Bill Cosby). <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiriUirjpz2YyQqvH8H-xnXGKHyrzltluIcr-LwBO8q0-3ZOmFi7KIaZJS3bDxuayOtit3VQy7MWJ9o5UHtyJUxn_Xp4Dxk6GQCyJTPjmkn06NjCf2U7oSqij173IGPQHw7jRyDyoTBidSJ/s1600-h/View+Behind+IDay.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiriUirjpz2YyQqvH8H-xnXGKHyrzltluIcr-LwBO8q0-3ZOmFi7KIaZJS3bDxuayOtit3VQy7MWJ9o5UHtyJUxn_Xp4Dxk6GQCyJTPjmkn06NjCf2U7oSqij173IGPQHw7jRyDyoTBidSJ/s320/View+Behind+IDay.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298420775573313442" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiFIQqdiGvEzTfHuTaklZrkTKPUoeG-LpyvLoNl332IIWFhoDhoHyII2HVEcHnsItTOFo3qGc1O9OvVuEc5jXMmSlO2cPGbSTXGU2bfPuKm2ME3Evq6qHawjHL_15764z_yyfhT6BQ_DiC/s1600-h/Mall+Overview+IDay.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiFIQqdiGvEzTfHuTaklZrkTKPUoeG-LpyvLoNl332IIWFhoDhoHyII2HVEcHnsItTOFo3qGc1O9OvVuEc5jXMmSlO2cPGbSTXGU2bfPuKm2ME3Evq6qHawjHL_15764z_yyfhT6BQ_DiC/s320/Mall+Overview+IDay.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298420865639089058" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZw6B3gltWOJE6ByPz2yalbok0ZNg_TIUbxDefrlz3MYG19Ctm9W6XqMm7zGnN7qEbJlajfvfJC6ZYAMrvlnXg_FDwKsRnBCUfC1Bot3ySIjQy2iiafuaH6y9nC3TTSu70s2RLdWdypWF2/s1600-h/Bens+Chili+Bowl.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZw6B3gltWOJE6ByPz2yalbok0ZNg_TIUbxDefrlz3MYG19Ctm9W6XqMm7zGnN7qEbJlajfvfJC6ZYAMrvlnXg_FDwKsRnBCUfC1Bot3ySIjQy2iiafuaH6y9nC3TTSu70s2RLdWdypWF2/s320/Bens+Chili+Bowl.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298420993813592802" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />The whole trip was a smashing success and I loved every freezing cold minute of it! In the midst of all the wonderful things going on in Providence I managed to finish a knitted pair of legwarmers! I know that I'm starting a business based on screenprinted textiles, but knitting is, in many ways, my true passion. As a matter of fact, I'm trying to start up a Thursday knitting night here in town. The sad part is that I haven't found a perfect, comfy, late-night coffee shop yet. More evidence that I need to start my own space that has coffee, yarn, classes, couches, and heck, maybe a yoga studio in the back? This is my idea of heaven - a business that serves the community through my two favorite pastimes and serves a great cup of coffee or tea.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilgS74J6Vat2HdzsIopFn3l3hpaw3M_lgLuzvkZGS0yTdGFmmOOuKYEHl-AcptzcOollPSWaarieu-rU-T8wnfUfVGlRfD2VF5RQqdxTFn4RHEoLmsNi9DTq4SBr6S-N4ovva5XslsGfnd/s1600-h/Legwarmer+Progress.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilgS74J6Vat2HdzsIopFn3l3hpaw3M_lgLuzvkZGS0yTdGFmmOOuKYEHl-AcptzcOollPSWaarieu-rU-T8wnfUfVGlRfD2VF5RQqdxTFn4RHEoLmsNi9DTq4SBr6S-N4ovva5XslsGfnd/s320/Legwarmer+Progress.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296927196662255266" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2byqdHLmyAqp-WPeFFnjirZBKqwS6u-SBs1vcOrXkExa2gtmr93RdK_anoGX3tLMjvSGLIX0_Mp0xmUBrZ4MoKzpo1qWkZ0sLQt5KqKWZ4L9v_8Vym5DeolI74Dvf7km6RPTDKQGO8XJr/s1600-h/Finished+Legwarmers.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2byqdHLmyAqp-WPeFFnjirZBKqwS6u-SBs1vcOrXkExa2gtmr93RdK_anoGX3tLMjvSGLIX0_Mp0xmUBrZ4MoKzpo1qWkZ0sLQt5KqKWZ4L9v_8Vym5DeolI74Dvf7km6RPTDKQGO8XJr/s320/Finished+Legwarmers.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296927307501840690" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />So here's the scoop on the legwarmers. I bought two skeins of a superwash merino in a DK weight while on the big family cruise to Alaska last summer. I skipped out on buying anything emblazoned with wolves or salmon in favor of buying yarn in every port. This yummy yarn has rust, yellow topaz, garnet, and sage colors that I decided to display in a really simple legwarmer knit in the round. I did some 1x1 ribbing at the top and bottom to help them stay in place. I decided to model them with my favorite high heels which are black, of course. And I'm propping my feet on my sheepskin rug which is my favorite splurge since New Years. I put it right next to my bed so that waking up on these 17 degree mornings is so much more pleasant. And it also makes a great spot to set up my meditation cushion and zen out in my bedroom.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQD-K7Y6ZkqE-zNIjB2QNd1r3zj57GzfMlF-8EW_7ECl9n1PC_9_4ILu8O0kiI8u2IF6LlSW7CGZmRuzKKwPa5_qkQ4wr7ElnO3fSZLL30Vras4eY6opJHM2-UkpiTFcohXkmQisKPxHa9/s1600-h/GRN+Butterfly.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQD-K7Y6ZkqE-zNIjB2QNd1r3zj57GzfMlF-8EW_7ECl9n1PC_9_4ILu8O0kiI8u2IF6LlSW7CGZmRuzKKwPa5_qkQ4wr7ElnO3fSZLL30Vras4eY6opJHM2-UkpiTFcohXkmQisKPxHa9/s320/GRN+Butterfly.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296930748921217874" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />I made such a big production about my butterfly print, I wanted to show off one of the finished products - little zippy pouches that are for sale on <a href="http://www.emmalinedesigns.etsy.com/">etsy</a>. Of course I have tons of pieces for large totes with the butterfly but I haven't managed to finish a single one! I started spending a great deal of time travelling to DC and NYC in the last two weeks plus I'm working on the product development side right now - I'm designing a yoga mat bag, doing research for some brand spanking new imagery, and knitting a big chunky cowl from another variegated yarn. I think it's going to be a weekend of getting my fiber on and finishing some of these works in progress!LEAHCHERRYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15187346962614427562noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3825571222156902892.post-87159556946775167422009-01-08T19:33:00.000-08:002009-01-08T20:03:58.871-08:00Zen LifeI have been very busy since I returned to work at the book bindery on Monday. I love being back but it certainly makes for less time to create here at my home studio. I am also a bit less productive because I've resolved for 2009 to be a year of deepening my spiritual practices. I am trying to avoid being overly busy and instead, make time for inward reflection. I hope this helps everything I do for myself and emmaline designs be imparted with calm and happiness.<br /><br />Last night I went to the <a href="http://www.providencezen.org/">Providence Zen Center</a> for the second time. The first time I took a tour, listened to a description of their technique and philosophy and then sat in silent meditation for 10 minutes. Over the holiday I practiced a little more, 10 minutes here, 20 minutes there, but not in any consistent way. Last night I went back for a full sitting in the main hall for one hour! The session is divided into three parts - 25 minutes sitting, 10 minutes walking, and then a final 25 minutes sitting. I have to confess, I felt really unsuccessful! I could mostly sit still, no fidgeting or moving around, but my mind is like a totally untrained puppy, getting its curious nose into absolutely everything it comes across. I just think and think and plan and wonder and imagine and then do some more planning and thinking. And was it worth it? Absolutely. I thought I would be great at meditation because of my background in yoga, but without the distraction of the physical poses for my mind to concentrate on I have to work much harder to keep my mind quiet and in the present.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDRTfglytVxOjhuUsUy0TvWb5UXthM3IlU-yu4I1UhCiczRUGu0V8d_YbiNmQBQAI7QEdDAoLBzKmJWK8Jlr3vKMhKDcmbxLpuYuEErXEs8IkYyKkzp9hxG4suAb-nqCgZSwR3gnT0k3-h/s1600-h/Namaste+Bag.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDRTfglytVxOjhuUsUy0TvWb5UXthM3IlU-yu4I1UhCiczRUGu0V8d_YbiNmQBQAI7QEdDAoLBzKmJWK8Jlr3vKMhKDcmbxLpuYuEErXEs8IkYyKkzp9hxG4suAb-nqCgZSwR3gnT0k3-h/s320/Namaste+Bag.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5289136964134766770" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />On the design front, I love the language of my yoga practice so much that I find myself constantly drawing things with blooming flowers and words that remind me to stay calm and centered. Namaste is one of those wonderful words. This gorgeous green bag is printed with two plumeria flowers, fragrant and beautiful blossoms that remind me of Hawaii. I probably won't be making this one again because the actual bag is not totally original (it's a modified pattern from a very well-known designer). However, I hope to be showing some newly finished bags over the weekend!<br /><br />Until then,<br />NamasteLEAHCHERRYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15187346962614427562noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3825571222156902892.post-60900948479726023982009-01-01T15:09:00.000-08:002009-01-01T15:28:44.008-08:00Happy New Year!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCXMRrDdfHMjWy1p5UfAQ_266l3PgEWFB4c4JjQAZ4spX8D1_olIcQNkX71XoI_42Gxe_G-eQeoFz6u4GN594EAOXElKl7_eXKZGM5He69G1Mveq25PJtiOYIJe-p11nzjJpxBdsckvXG6/s1600-h/Jump+for+Joy.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCXMRrDdfHMjWy1p5UfAQ_266l3PgEWFB4c4JjQAZ4spX8D1_olIcQNkX71XoI_42Gxe_G-eQeoFz6u4GN594EAOXElKl7_eXKZGM5He69G1Mveq25PJtiOYIJe-p11nzjJpxBdsckvXG6/s320/Jump+for+Joy.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5286470909787150226" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />The first day of the year is off to a mellow start, 18 degrees outside but nice and warm in my cozy apartment. It feels appropriate to be talking about knitting today because that is how my return to art and craft began. Eight years ago my little sister taught me how to knit and my obsession with fiber grew from there, eventually leading me to study design at ASU and now, to move to Rhode Island and get my crafty on, full time. I'm not the first to wax poetic about the wonder of two sticks and one long string being twisted and knotted into a whole and complete piece of cloth. It is an elemental process - the making of cloth to warm, decorate, and express ourselves.<br /><br />But let's not get too serious, because it is also tremendously fun and creative to knit, as well. My personal knitting style is best described as "fiber first." I fall in love with a ball of yarn, it's color, touch, and smell, and then I try to figure out how I want to wear or use it. A lot of the time it stays in this loosely wound ball for a long time before I am willing to knit with it! What I wanted to show off here is a one-ply teal yarn that is kettle dyed for rich and subtle variation of highs and lows. It's a worsted weight, so I knit this on #9 needles (Crystal Palace bamboos, if you must know) in a simple double moss stitch.<br /><br />Besides all this techno-knitting jargon, the point is that I get to wear the yarn around my neck! I made a really simple flat piece of cloth with no shaping. I knew I wanted to have the cowl button up (buttons are my newest knitting obsession) so I did some yarn-overs to make button holes. In a flash of inspiration I decided to make a ruffle after these button holes because I thought it would accentuate the "scrunchiness" of the wide cowl. And sure enough, it looks fab! I've been wearing it around the house ever since it got finished because it makes me feel both warm and fancy. Perfect!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSsrxrAjt4JxSVQix0ZKcvixjYlHiLkA6Lx3jjU7Y9lsqt81p9aSIn59gd0vQROjyvbDlyM-EIYGscK9rxf57nEtV19ijXVHihuN_sC7LADSk_ryCVV_NuJO3DWs8fS4sW4q3coT0HkNo9/s1600-h/Portrait+View.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSsrxrAjt4JxSVQix0ZKcvixjYlHiLkA6Lx3jjU7Y9lsqt81p9aSIn59gd0vQROjyvbDlyM-EIYGscK9rxf57nEtV19ijXVHihuN_sC7LADSk_ryCVV_NuJO3DWs8fS4sW4q3coT0HkNo9/s320/Portrait+View.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5286469709753964098" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-PWghgNiX88IxptysH63ugRWf-ythzM8-90Lm_Mx5pjzMeAphyWBiISBFScuYpCrqC1YWA4AC9snDf7ToK3OVQefLOi5y1cjptx37gnRBiRj8tTsHwx3AXmYKpyxHEUAU9T7Rgc5b9U2t/s1600-h/Ruffle+Detail.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-PWghgNiX88IxptysH63ugRWf-ythzM8-90Lm_Mx5pjzMeAphyWBiISBFScuYpCrqC1YWA4AC9snDf7ToK3OVQefLOi5y1cjptx37gnRBiRj8tTsHwx3AXmYKpyxHEUAU9T7Rgc5b9U2t/s320/Ruffle+Detail.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5286469572651090898" border="0" /></a>LEAHCHERRYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15187346962614427562noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3825571222156902892.post-36596999815960555302008-12-30T21:25:00.000-08:002008-12-30T22:08:27.453-08:00L'Espoir Butterfly Print<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDli5iPUNKGIIreyIPLq9zQWV5Eu1YicpU6bkBadc-hho-Fq7K-Fbsmsh58wH_CvCxsl13j6jw5HLoykdIOe6Df_ednw-mm0kfBmQZ5tUFW1tVPSxcVCF44fPgiHWSYqdmFssXf71V-UB7/s1600-h/Dot+Line+Butterfly.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDli5iPUNKGIIreyIPLq9zQWV5Eu1YicpU6bkBadc-hho-Fq7K-Fbsmsh58wH_CvCxsl13j6jw5HLoykdIOe6Df_ednw-mm0kfBmQZ5tUFW1tVPSxcVCF44fPgiHWSYqdmFssXf71V-UB7/s320/Dot+Line+Butterfly.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285830528548912946" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />I got back in the print shop this week to work on some new designs. I mentioned my Chinese paper cuts in the last post and now you get to see how they turned out! After much deliberation and tinkering around I decided to pair the butterfly with the french word for hope, "l'espoir." It felt appropriate as I think there is nothing more delicate and beautiful than hope, and this is shared by the essence of the butterfly.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihrkQzW6BZU-_hIgtSfRC9poWtidLzhmgpkp_3q7Ko99uFUGzLOc_T8w-zvn-UdFE4hGYLuoOko5tqkB2DUg5MsDxIqtHbYgShktrsr7tjY4sfzheA7oAow53gELB_bSBCAqnlAO3lc6AY/s1600-h/Films.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihrkQzW6BZU-_hIgtSfRC9poWtidLzhmgpkp_3q7Ko99uFUGzLOc_T8w-zvn-UdFE4hGYLuoOko5tqkB2DUg5MsDxIqtHbYgShktrsr7tjY4sfzheA7oAow53gELB_bSBCAqnlAO3lc6AY/s320/Films.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285824876805206818" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih-rxrWb-YZvLFVcY5oEPGbSaMYtzEMHtlgH1w02afQrl3qkAF3mnJeS0qGSCl9Bd_f3rvDyRjCiitCRFyeloov3I4D3CEubD3nhrTBl6zawm7XQgjmTUJKeB5Gc5vSY5AaBnYNvAy1Ywb/s1600-h/Light+Table.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih-rxrWb-YZvLFVcY5oEPGbSaMYtzEMHtlgH1w02afQrl3qkAF3mnJeS0qGSCl9Bd_f3rvDyRjCiitCRFyeloov3I4D3CEubD3nhrTBl6zawm7XQgjmTUJKeB5Gc5vSY5AaBnYNvAy1Ywb/s320/Light+Table.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285827003132629394" border="0" /></a>I took more photographs of my printing process as I didn't do it justice last time. Unfortunately there aren't any good action shots of the ink pulling, since I fly solo most of the time. But then again, it's literally just pulling a squeegee back and forth across a piece of mesh. I make the films cheaply and quickly with thin acetate on our studio laser printer. The film goes onto the light table and the screen goes over the image. This gets covered with light proof fabric and exposed for about 8 seconds on the high intensity UV tube lights you see there. By the way, the yellow light is from the safe lights that must be used while working with the unexposed screen. The screen gets taken to the sink and rinsed to reveal the printing image.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrpVjY7FrQztt5XX6wi0Q675qpuPB7GIi8S4slVDTi6MUA_N3f65KK4O7u1vqJUEzh8wAik40KPhgXD6-j5dU9NWNESfYW-o-BDhzt8Znu7zpeAVeeRSRigBNNm1Jjjn_ezZ2jRuan9-WV/s1600-h/Drying+Rack.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrpVjY7FrQztt5XX6wi0Q675qpuPB7GIi8S4slVDTi6MUA_N3f65KK4O7u1vqJUEzh8wAik40KPhgXD6-j5dU9NWNESfYW-o-BDhzt8Znu7zpeAVeeRSRigBNNm1Jjjn_ezZ2jRuan9-WV/s320/Drying+Rack.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285828790013785602" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDflYHes8yVHSTBXm725hR3oplBHel9hAT3ZYxnZVsl8ebgRjks3DCqqlbL8uOZZ1VJ3V0GQ4t_qRI3CaIkKXI_VhlVwa1LFIXaekiSW5NlzAgoBYobsf4R-zhm-iKY4lmzMo96FxtJV2q/s1600-h/Printshop+Portrait.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDflYHes8yVHSTBXm725hR3oplBHel9hAT3ZYxnZVsl8ebgRjks3DCqqlbL8uOZZ1VJ3V0GQ4t_qRI3CaIkKXI_VhlVwa1LFIXaekiSW5NlzAgoBYobsf4R-zhm-iKY4lmzMo96FxtJV2q/s320/Printshop+Portrait.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285829887483104338" border="0" /></a>I'm also including my printshop portrait - a pretty classy polaroid that shows the dark circles under my eyes! I was happy to experience my first New England snowstorm last weekend and was even happier that the snow melted two days ago. For me, the girl from sunny California, living in snow felt like living on another planet! Life as we know it came to a screeching halt and a new regime took hold of the town. All the things I take for granted, such as wearing normal shoes or parking on the street, were no longer an option. But snow is also one of the reasons I wanted to move here in the first place! So I ventured out there in my boots and the white hat I knit especially for snow-romping and I danced and played and made snowmen. I got to see the world through that wonderful lens of innocence and wonder that comes from experiencing something for the first time.<br /><br />Now that the snow has melted and it's vacation time, I am working hard to make new designs, screen-print them, then sew up some new goods and get them online for sale! I have about 10 small accessory / makeup bags in a design called "namaste" being sewn up right now. Also, I'm currently working on a design with a butterfly that is inspired by a set of paper cut-outs from China that I've been toting around with me for years. I'll be sure to let everyone know when there are more goodies in the etsy shop.<br /><br />Happy holidays to everyone!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhv3WIuElmfnhz192XTyvC1UD-fTBnoE6pmSXE8ExLHmD7D6L-7EJTbbJuezE6yDCfy2ktsdehXRaiy5dLZKo5SJDTaPBARGvUM_YFiTSSzX9Lj19lYbTaUuUrdEMySBCRmYtEOCcP9MAyg/s1600-h/Namaste+Blog+Image.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 134px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhv3WIuElmfnhz192XTyvC1UD-fTBnoE6pmSXE8ExLHmD7D6L-7EJTbbJuezE6yDCfy2ktsdehXRaiy5dLZKo5SJDTaPBARGvUM_YFiTSSzX9Lj19lYbTaUuUrdEMySBCRmYtEOCcP9MAyg/s320/Namaste+Blog+Image.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5284363283301316050" border="0" /></a>LEAHCHERRYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15187346962614427562noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3825571222156902892.post-53287690657129098012008-11-30T20:26:00.000-08:002008-11-30T20:44:14.962-08:00We Like TeaThis is a little off the topic of design, but then again, I seem to survive primarily on caffeine. And my favorite purveyor of all things caffeinated is the Seven Stars Bakery in Providence. Conveniently there is a location one block from my house and another location a 2 minute drive from the book bindery! So it's possible for me to go there two or three times a day.<br /><br />My love is contagious and I've infected my co-workers! The following photo series depicts a typical trip to the bakery. Jeff has been lovely enough to let me photograph him (and Nate's back, by the way) through the entire tea-procuring process. I think it's English Breakfast...<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjK-RztuYL2K5TddvotdE6N_0A80FkWxGuI0Tr74j5BGijroSEGO4cH6wRC0Ltndvtljag7XewevlFjTW-_oAQ38lww38izReCaBKsuaFLB4I2uOp5ObON6eFS12fuxsyxff7QZ-SuaCeXM/s1600-h/A1.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjK-RztuYL2K5TddvotdE6N_0A80FkWxGuI0Tr74j5BGijroSEGO4cH6wRC0Ltndvtljag7XewevlFjTW-_oAQ38lww38izReCaBKsuaFLB4I2uOp5ObON6eFS12fuxsyxff7QZ-SuaCeXM/s320/A1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274676575194463522" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh94rCF8-U9mWY-CfJLYVieAxYkDI7rB4422xRzDlOp364o38HZ2n_q_26sLER5EOWly0vK94EbdHD_7ern_x84ZzKEZgR3_Hxiw0eeQIOlT9uAN6o3BpqUgviIosx1I2cl9Y3cGfR7xnc/s1600-h/A2.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh94rCF8-U9mWY-CfJLYVieAxYkDI7rB4422xRzDlOp364o38HZ2n_q_26sLER5EOWly0vK94EbdHD_7ern_x84ZzKEZgR3_Hxiw0eeQIOlT9uAN6o3BpqUgviIosx1I2cl9Y3cGfR7xnc/s320/A2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274676649755139730" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKsjH6DozWlz1hFrqDtOM4NvzZz9m61imDSp12xEw35ZoSsNUZSwfe8cpZpCvIj6HEGd3iIqFx-no5MTOPLV8erSEKMiUnjqxUsz-6uE-Uy4ZbMpTHW-rf6o2-1IlQaD385Ezfhm4MsKOR/s1600-h/A3.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKsjH6DozWlz1hFrqDtOM4NvzZz9m61imDSp12xEw35ZoSsNUZSwfe8cpZpCvIj6HEGd3iIqFx-no5MTOPLV8erSEKMiUnjqxUsz-6uE-Uy4ZbMpTHW-rf6o2-1IlQaD385Ezfhm4MsKOR/s320/A3.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274676722077037666" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguJNAlzHG2s1z7udmU2D56RioFtHoDuGks9Jal2LhR0MUPVaKWe6i4W6gogUlwFXw0cALy0-sHnYF-wurcB_yEHppisAzl-FWrFvTE5w7JnptacjrsrrcUQH-o0QiasAkBqCg5xKYLeqKn/s1600-h/A4.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguJNAlzHG2s1z7udmU2D56RioFtHoDuGks9Jal2LhR0MUPVaKWe6i4W6gogUlwFXw0cALy0-sHnYF-wurcB_yEHppisAzl-FWrFvTE5w7JnptacjrsrrcUQH-o0QiasAkBqCg5xKYLeqKn/s320/A4.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274676805182188370" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqgF3qX1s5o5QqZ5l3-ppm_ZwR7Cx16ie-KcpKwIT9pEYeNSF3JVetKf0LvXBY5gKpxRgD8ueuM1Sitim59mA1xlGsXQkaHbBZ-63ggro0LoGNOYFyB-FDP7MO7xJZmXEuael9-hQkrgIR/s1600-h/A5.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqgF3qX1s5o5QqZ5l3-ppm_ZwR7Cx16ie-KcpKwIT9pEYeNSF3JVetKf0LvXBY5gKpxRgD8ueuM1Sitim59mA1xlGsXQkaHbBZ-63ggro0LoGNOYFyB-FDP7MO7xJZmXEuael9-hQkrgIR/s320/A5.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274676882097184930" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEsw6R_5pYDZzIKPsIf-_S9q9zlbNHHpL2gdyqdCHIZdhQJGaftyz_TIZF6EQLhapcUoT3LUu2z349tXRh2LaHaKotnTRcGrmoJD01LzwpAojzaGjqxGODFP0vs3lQGIO6cg9usyMeFS56/s1600-h/A6.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEsw6R_5pYDZzIKPsIf-_S9q9zlbNHHpL2gdyqdCHIZdhQJGaftyz_TIZF6EQLhapcUoT3LUu2z349tXRh2LaHaKotnTRcGrmoJD01LzwpAojzaGjqxGODFP0vs3lQGIO6cg9usyMeFS56/s320/A6.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274676944573105554" border="0" /></a>LEAHCHERRYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15187346962614427562noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3825571222156902892.post-47102937034162373092008-11-29T21:40:00.000-08:002008-11-29T21:49:27.874-08:00Etsy Launch!!!It's been an amazing Thanksgiving weekend - I've been enjoying solitude and freedom from schedules. But being the determined girl that I am, I spent most of my time working on my business and now I get to share the fruits of my labor! I have finally posted my first items for sale on Etsy! I was literally jumping around the apartment being totally flabbergasted that someone could go online and buy something that I made. And by made, I mean conceived, designed, printed, stitched and finished! It's just so darn exciting. Hence the plethora of exclamation points...<br /><br />Here are a few photos of finished products for a teaser, but <a href="http://emmalinedesigns.etsy.com/">check me out! </a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfKU5ZCpGQ9lHD4_Djwoh4XyVETGOp4v0ll_St41rLTE6UcBh9H0IVzg5vW2WZMggf8mmHK8v3lf0Q-wyqkL2I5CzLFbPg5_T1cUObdarhxpuTjEs5Xt4LekAM2HyoVDS_4LggiD2oQREc/s1600-h/Breathe+Gray+Shoulder+View.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfKU5ZCpGQ9lHD4_Djwoh4XyVETGOp4v0ll_St41rLTE6UcBh9H0IVzg5vW2WZMggf8mmHK8v3lf0Q-wyqkL2I5CzLFbPg5_T1cUObdarhxpuTjEs5Xt4LekAM2HyoVDS_4LggiD2oQREc/s320/Breathe+Gray+Shoulder+View.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274322687329147650" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgk6NDrClFEHj6jI6YDM2yx5j6dIsr7ugoaRMbitvIY0-jeaDBloOloMtf2DQtW0T1MRKY0Nd9ueJSx-ub1hLiU4LmFF8-KXtiYZBxYI6rK9WMEnTdxwGtoFblNlIwaxhhdT_Cu2Jywg_Ea/s1600-h/JoieBon+Black+1+Interior+Detail.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgk6NDrClFEHj6jI6YDM2yx5j6dIsr7ugoaRMbitvIY0-jeaDBloOloMtf2DQtW0T1MRKY0Nd9ueJSx-ub1hLiU4LmFF8-KXtiYZBxYI6rK9WMEnTdxwGtoFblNlIwaxhhdT_Cu2Jywg_Ea/s320/JoieBon+Black+1+Interior+Detail.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274323204089777986" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXE-68jmi2phFm4RN8T9WP7tFXWrhUIOaJNX65mc5n65qSuBROD2VI8bPOnRcYHELm_hJNSyqQPWPR5XSTsBTI8NetlfJwwc8ZIY6g0QtZGOfOqe4y-fiNwK8Y59gdkorPHuXZLkEujoqN/s1600-h/Breathe+BlackGreen+Portrait.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXE-68jmi2phFm4RN8T9WP7tFXWrhUIOaJNX65mc5n65qSuBROD2VI8bPOnRcYHELm_hJNSyqQPWPR5XSTsBTI8NetlfJwwc8ZIY6g0QtZGOfOqe4y-fiNwK8Y59gdkorPHuXZLkEujoqN/s320/Breathe+BlackGreen+Portrait.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274322971665704770" border="0" /></a>LEAHCHERRYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15187346962614427562noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3825571222156902892.post-79605123069131025222008-11-13T19:25:00.001-08:002008-11-13T19:49:08.405-08:00Hijacked CeramicsMy co-worker and friend, Nate Murrell, is an amazing potter. I appreciate this as a textile artist which often involves painstaking attention to detail. It's also really interesting how he uses Indian woodblocks to create impressions in his clay - the same blocks used in traditional Indian textile printing. I bought a beautiful tumbler at the sale and it's whet my appetite for more. You can buy Nate's amazing pottery on Etsy as HijackedCeramics. Check him out!<br /><a href="http://www.hijackedceramics.etsy.com/">hijackedceramics.etsy.com</a><br /><a href="http://www.hijackedceramics.blogspot.com/">hijackedceramics.blogspot.com</a><br /><br />While visiting his studio, I was completely surprised to see Nate's striking sculptures. In this recent body of work, puppet-like figures are mounted in shadow-box frames that Nate finds from classic sculptor sources - garbage dumpsters and thrift stores. My favorite piece had sequins and beading and a quiet yet strong presence. I could definitely imagine having one of his pieces in my house! Our other co-worker, the talented illustrator Jeff, is having a Sistine Chapel moment with one of Nate's thought-provoking works.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3krqtMAR9rCSxz7f4MnZJ32G-ovtJktyeYFiECAfXel-3wY5VEEzZvX6-HwPos1BUGEMDVHLlh-7vfS6sP9-Msbcj_GndXwCiIh_7JbEQd0M6_HMcct9wnBPl-sVq8g7I-0JZVcxh5RFO/s1600-h/Jeff+and+Sculpture.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3krqtMAR9rCSxz7f4MnZJ32G-ovtJktyeYFiECAfXel-3wY5VEEzZvX6-HwPos1BUGEMDVHLlh-7vfS6sP9-Msbcj_GndXwCiIh_7JbEQd0M6_HMcct9wnBPl-sVq8g7I-0JZVcxh5RFO/s320/Jeff+and+Sculpture.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5268349892052640898" border="0" /></a>LEAHCHERRYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15187346962614427562noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3825571222156902892.post-69357295258388541182008-11-09T19:42:00.001-08:002008-11-09T20:17:50.526-08:00Screenprinting Weekend<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBqmp7yA2yhecgq7Crm4Y7sCWlzRfzfOkP8cWzSEZSyiPbu7nIdvl2YLhqp8vQCVxw-aURv5_22-DUeM-KvNXMLobUuouanI6fVnxP7w81slo1WrQv1b6En9V-yQkyDl38vpdcddfcr3-U/s1600-h/Finished+Bag1a.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBqmp7yA2yhecgq7Crm4Y7sCWlzRfzfOkP8cWzSEZSyiPbu7nIdvl2YLhqp8vQCVxw-aURv5_22-DUeM-KvNXMLobUuouanI6fVnxP7w81slo1WrQv1b6En9V-yQkyDl38vpdcddfcr3-U/s320/Finished+Bag1a.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5266875422776856162" border="0" /></a>It was a wonderfully mild November weekend. Sunny, bright, and full of inspiration to get busy and make some work.<br /><br />I went into the studio this weekend to screenprint the fabric that I will sew into my pleated tote bag. I thought I'd take some photographs of the process that I find so magical. I prepare the screen so that ink comes through the mesh according to the design I am working with. It doesn't matter how familiar I am with the image, I am ridiculously excited each time I get the ink onto the fabric! It makes me sound pretty goofy when I am squealing in the studio amongst the super cool and mellow printmakers. Oh well...<br /><br />What you see here is me putting my screen into place for my design, "joie et bonheur," French for "joy and happiness."<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEienvmJaTLmiGYLIGAGKdc-kvtWIeJl_Sj3Z5QXCxlIUPnjkF6IpK5ggb2fHteIh3Pfn3McJ-JYFIkp8ykFIeRCSqK8h4pUvUk210BoGpeMUmfftQu43-f3aqzQUXb8cpu84nHCKJtR3k0E/s1600-h/Screenprint1.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEienvmJaTLmiGYLIGAGKdc-kvtWIeJl_Sj3Z5QXCxlIUPnjkF6IpK5ggb2fHteIh3Pfn3McJ-JYFIkp8ykFIeRCSqK8h4pUvUk210BoGpeMUmfftQu43-f3aqzQUXb8cpu84nHCKJtR3k0E/s320/Screenprint1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5266870691932404002" border="0" /></a>The screen is on a hinge so I can keep it in one place in between each print. And finally, you see that the image has been transferred from the screen to the fabric by me pulling a squeegee of ink across the screen about seven or eight times. Unlike paper screenprinting, fabric needs a lot of ink to get a nice, thick, and juicy layer that will soak into the cotton and give a great print.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUw-cYCq_9TNMZJFjs70-B4wn0a2t7F4DSf3Wd1LPAtw7F4OwL7AS8ZgMFL6UN3m95IG2HnIgSg2-ouX_m2CNEYATGpGCuA1ox5YPPgM6nWICIn_AsAhmCi494eR-Fn-CsEFBF9R_DKo1a/s1600-h/Screenprint3.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUw-cYCq_9TNMZJFjs70-B4wn0a2t7F4DSf3Wd1LPAtw7F4OwL7AS8ZgMFL6UN3m95IG2HnIgSg2-ouX_m2CNEYATGpGCuA1ox5YPPgM6nWICIn_AsAhmCi494eR-Fn-CsEFBF9R_DKo1a/s320/Screenprint3.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5266872988003435554" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />The next step will be to post my first finished bag on emmalinedesigns.etsy.com. But I have many more ideas and products coming, like printed kitchen towels and little zipper bags to hold small stuff like knitting needles, lipgloss, or that spare change hanging out at the bottom of your purse. It's a race between me and the holiday season to get my designs on Etsy!<br /><br />Hope everyone had a great weekend. I'll let you know as soon as I'm ready to open my "doors" for business!LEAHCHERRYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15187346962614427562noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3825571222156902892.post-68761901651632701532008-11-07T20:16:00.000-08:002008-11-09T19:27:11.257-08:00Providence Debut<span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-family:courier new;"><span style="font-family:georgia;">Emmaline Designs is an idea that has been hatching for years now. A California native, I have spent the last three years gathering experiences across the globe, from Ukraine, Vietnam, Hawaii, and Phoenix and now I am settling into Providence, Rhode Island.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:georgia;">As a student of Political Science and French at UC Berkeley I could never help myself from knitting, sewing, photography, cooking, gardening, and teaching. While I was managing a wonderful restaurant on the Big Island of Hawaii, I decided that I needed to pursue my interests in art and design full-time. </span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:georgia;">I moved to Phoenix to attend Arizona State University to study graphic design as well as sculpture, textiles, and letterpress. Inspired by my RISD alumni mentors, I took a huge risk and packed up all my belongings and sent them out to Providence so I could immerse myself in its culture of art-making and risk-taking. Though some of the furniture was mysteriously lost on the way, I arrived in one piece.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:georgia;">As luck would have it I found an amazing job making books the first week here. I joined a printmaking collective and learned how to screenprint on fabric which led to my current project: handmade tote bags. Lots of people make bags, they're everywhere! So why am I jumping into these crowded waters? Because I use bags everyday, of different sizes and shapes for different reasons. In our busy modern lives we are constantly on the go, we need to carry things around with us! I design my bags with style, durability, and practicality. The extra step I take is printing the fabric with words and images that are based on my favorite philosophies and inspirations. Who can't benefit from a little optimistic encouragement?</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:georgia;">I'm excited to make emmaline designs a fun and inspiring design firm that offers more and more great products and ideas to my friends and customers.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:georgia;">Thanks for stopping by and let's chat again soon! </span><br /></span></span>LEAHCHERRYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15187346962614427562noreply@blogger.com0
